Secure Javascript Password Generator

March 13th, 2006

I’ve been working a few days on a password generator. It uses javascript and sha1 to generate an 8-character password (a truncated sha1 hash). It’s fairly simple, given a domain name and your ‘master password’, it can generate a password for every website you go to.

This is what the popup from the bookmarklet currently looks like. Easy eh?

Why is this handy? Well, its great because rather than using the same password for every website, this tool allows you to use your ‘master’ password for every site and it will, in turn, generate an sha1 password so that every website will have a unique password. This bookmarklet makes it so you never have to remember each password to every site. You only have to remember your master password. Also, it uses a one-way hash. No one can ever get a reverse hash or figure out your master password.
Also, if one site is hacked, you don’t have to worry about your password on other sites. Every site has a unique pass!
If you want to get started, go here for more information. It has a guide and some examples on how it all works. This works great with firefox. I’ve not tested it on other browsers. Feel free to leave feedback :)

Update: This does not currently work in Internet Explorer, and I probably won’t devote the time required to make it work in IE. I’m somewhat pro-firefox and ignore most everything else.

    WOW - That really stinks.

A lot of people hate Microsoft because of hard heavy handed tactics. I wonder if Apple will receive any backlash becuase of this?

    Dear Ramdac ,

As a Mac Afliado i relly on information gathered from forum’s , rumour sites & blogs as your own , so i can only be gratefull for the information you’dd be providing to the community.

However, with this article you are given out the names of 3 3 of the persons who are being sued by Apple, you even tell you you got it in cofidence by one of them who even is your friend. I think removing their reallife names is the least you can do for your friend & the other known accused. Over here you are innocent until proven otherwise in court ( we are still far away from that situation atm ) & even if they are proven guilty in the future it is not to you to decide if you would reveal their names. I really hope you remove those.

It’s not that i think they are innocent , did nothing wrong or even did a good deed to the rest of us . They did bad things to Apple , period. Apple whom i & even these guys love in a special kind of way. But i just think you should respect their privacy.

    Dear Anonymous,

Since this case in now apart of public record, is privacy the real issue here? Anyone can look up this case, whether they read this website or not, and get these guys names. I didnt read in Ramdac’s article that he recieved anything in “confidence” so Privacy may have been irrelevent (Which it is).

What the heck is an afliado.

Afliado is not in the dictionary, so I suppose it is not a real word. Much like a MAC is not a real comp….ok I wont go there ;) he he

    Dear anonymous,

As Joey has already stated, this is a part of the public domain.

Besides my “friend” *told* me to post it.

Listen, the information the developer posted was not the best kept secret in the world. Apple is just upset this guy let the cat out of the bag before they were ready with the ad blitz. While some might find it immoral or repugnant, he did nothing illegal and I’m certain the courts would come to the same conclusion.

By the way, I’m sure most have seen this but it’s so damned funny. Bill Gates posing for Teen Beat magazine in 1983:

    …. scary…
