Slowpoke Rodriguez Part II

January 30th, 2006

About this time last year, I posted an article requesting some Slowpoke Rodriguez audio clips, and a couple of very nice people have submitted some files. You can listen to them here!

The internet is *painfully* devoid of Slowpoke clips, both audio or video. Not even Google Video has any clips of him. I miss the guy. here’s what I’ve learned from Geoff Mukhtar:

The Cartoon Network refuses to air any of the Speedy Gonzales films since the lead character is an “offensive ethnic stereotype” of Mexicans. However, Speedy Gonzales cartoons are still shown on a regular basis on Cartoon Network Latin America where, according to spokesperson Laurie Goldberg, they are “hugely popular”.

I never knew cartoon network to be ’sensitive’ to this sort of thing. I’ve seen some racy things on the cartoon network. I can’t believe they would ban Speedy and Slowpoke. I’m incensed.

I Implore the Cartoon network to reconsider their policy.

Rotten.com also has an interesting article describing all manner of Banned cartoons.

Christmas in New York (December 2005)

Statue of Liberty The View from the Empire State Building Liberty Island Dock Empire State Building Empire State Building Inside the Statue of Liberty Times Square at Christmas

This past Christmas (Dec. ‘05) I decided to get away for some R&R, much to the chagrin of my family. I had never been to New York City before, and I was a bit uneasy due to the transit strike. Luckily, the strike ended the day I was scheduled to fly out to NYC. I had a blast. I went to Liberty Island to see the Statue of Liberty, I went up to the top of the Empire State building, and I got to see Lion King at the New Amsterdam Theatre–it was amazing. I also hopped on those city bus tours and it was rather inciteful. I took a few pictures and one of the is a “velvia” shot taken from atop the Empire State Building–I hope you like.

How can Spying protect civil liberties?

January 26th, 2006

It can’t…. at least not in my book.

So there’s this supersecret spying program that President Bush has going on the people of the United States. Media outlets are calling it the “Warantless surveillance of terrorist threats”. Whatever it’s called, big brother is watching you.

Bush told a White House news conference that the domestic spying program “is designed to protect civil liberties” and declared that “it’s necessary.”

I don’t think even someone in MENSA could convince me that the act of spying on me is somehow related to the protection of my civil liberties. Those two seem mutually exclusive.

This brings to mind the following:

“They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

- Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania, 1759.

Superdome has sponsor, Nagin chimes in.

January 23rd, 2006

The Mayor of New Orleans, Louisiana last week urged residents to rebuild a “chocolate New Orleans” and saying, “You can’t have New Orleans no other way.” Wonderfully said, complete with double negatives–Perfect for New Orleans. That said, it’s only fitting that the Superdome have this new sponsor.

Congrats New Orleans, congrats Nagin!

Chris B., thanks for sending this in.
