NYC - please don’t strike!
I’m scheduled for a Christmas trip to NYC. One problem–the threat of a transit strike. If transit workers strike, that’ll be 33,000 people not working. That’ll also mean 7 million people who use NYC’s subway and bus system will be throwing the city into a bit of havoc.
I will surely dislike my Christmas vacation being hosed up, and I’m sure 7millions others feel the same way.

Unions are a scourge on the planet. They’re doing this the week before Christmas to unfairly squeeze money and benefits from the city/port authority/whoever pays them. Otherwise, they would strike in say, August. Makes me sick. Typical of unions.

yeah I heard about that… It’ll be okay. I mean traffic on the roads will be very heavy, but hey we bought new walking shoes, so we’ll gain some muscle out there.
Well unions is what gave you better/fair pay, and is what gave our country the 8 hour work day, so they aren’t all that bad. But in the early 1900’s they did great things, that shaped our country and helped the little man.

Jim, she just served up a nice, hot place of “booyah”. She’s right. Without unions, you wouldn’t have the benefits you have at work. You’d have a much longer work day. You’d have no “days off” and you’d be missing out on a ton of other things you may be taking for granted.
Unions aren’t all bad. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.

Union use to have a place, because they cared about they workers they represent, but they have long since forgotten about the people. The Unions care about the dues they receive and force workers to strike whether they believe in the cause or not. It is time to abolish all Unions.
Unions create situations where the best man doesnt always get the promotion. I do not want a run a business where I can not fire someone who is not good.
Yes Unions had a place in history, but that is why they call it history.

Okay Joey, why wouldn’t you be allowed to fire someone who wasn’t a good employee? Of course if you had a contract with that person I can understand that, but other than that why wouldn’t you be able to?

Back when they started unions… We needed them, peole worked 16 hour days and got paid nothing for their work. some people would get paid 20 cents and hour and others would get paid 55 cents a hour. Unions made it so that the works got fair pay and even IDK 35 cents a hour, and worked 8 hour shifts, and have to be paid over time if they worked more than that.

Unions shapred the way we work today, and they are greatly appreciated for that, but as Joey stated…
Unions have changed since then, and the causes they latch themselves onto aren’t what they used to be. Unions now cause a lot of problems, that cause people to lose their jobs because they took a strike, or they cause people to lose a few paychecks, and they can’t provide for their families.
Then again, if we didn’t have unions anymore, I am sure that there is the possibility that we could go back to where we wree before we had them.

I alot of Companies have laborers that are unionized, and they dont over work or underpay the employees.
Ditto, lets say that me and you work for company X. You are a better employee than me and the bosses know it, but I have been there longer. A promotion comes open and you want it, You will not get it if I want it also, because senority rules. I will also most likely be paid more based on the same facts. Simple economics tells me that is a horrible way to run a business. I will not be efficient if I cannot promote the good employees.

The Workers went on Strike this morning. The last Strike 25 years ago lasted 11 days. Mayor Bloomberg says it will cost New York like 11 Million dollars a day in extra policeman, of course they dont have to pay the transit guys though. It is illegal for the Transit workers to strike in New York, and a Judge is looking into the situation this morning. Good Luck Ramdac.
The Mayor walked to work today

Joey says it well and in the proper context. Yes Jason, you and Ditto are right about what unions did for us many moons ago. But they are way too corrupt, politically and financially motivated regimes now. Now they force unfair practices, wage increases, and insurance increases on companies, who in turn have to stick it to the customers in higher prices and perhaps lower quality goods and services.
If this was truly for the good of the common worker type thing, why are they striking a few days before Christmas? Why not take up their grievances next week? I’m glad the city is playing hardball. I hope they get the shit kicked out of them financially. I’m all for moderate increases in worker’s rights and pay, but not the gross tactics used by this union. They want an 8% increase in pay when most industries are barely funding 4%? They want more of their insurance paid for when the trend in corporate America is to pay for less?

I am glad that the city is playing hardball too… I do think that unions did great things for us years and years ago, but now, they just cause problems. I can’t wait to go to New York, even though the streets will be crowded.
I’ll get the best taste of street traffic I guess… Might not be as cold with all those people out! hehe

I heard $40 cab rides are now $300, and you have to have 4 people in all vehicles to cross some streets. It is still cool to go, but I promise the confusion is going to be a HUGE headache.

The Union workers are going back to work. Ramdac is sooooo lucky
hehe
