Navy Jack in the News in Baton Rouge

2theadvocate, the Baton Rouged-based news organization, today released an article about how Jeff Clark led a spontaneous march in support of the purple and gold rebel flag (originally known as the Navy Jack). This caused quite a stir in Baton Rouge yesterday. “Students marching Saturday to ban a Confederate flag, dyed in LSU’s colors met the most fiery opposition from tailgaters since the students began protests of the popular game-day decoration three weeks ago.”
A man who identified himself as Rev. Raymond Brown, a member of the National Action Network and the New Black Panther Party, sets afire a Confederate flag during a pre-march rally Saturday on LSU’s campus. More than 200 students and community members walked to Tiger Stadium in protest of a purple-and-gold version of the banner, which they say is a symbol of racism.

Well, Jeff Clark decided to excercise his own free speech rights and march down there waving his purple and gold rebel flag. I spoke to Jeff for about an hour tonight and found out just what went on. “I bought the last one in Baton Rouge. Because of these protestors, they don’t sell them anymore”, Jeff stated.
“If they’re going to march down the street and speak their mind, I’m going to speak mine,” he said. He also said that the crowd grew and followed him along his march. Cops were eventually called. Concerned that the pole could be used as a weapon, they took it away and gave him the flag. This hardly deterred Jeff–he simply had someone hold the other end, and they raised it high while they marched.
Something tells me this story isn’t over. I might have to start selling these flags

good for him! The whole thing is ridiculous.
You dont see Rev. Raymond Brown getting all upset at black “artists” on BET or the countless other things that would be worthwhile.
November 7th, 2005 at 11:03 am
Geez, these same people marching against the Confederate flag are probably the same ones encouraging “diversity” in all aspects of public life, and would probably fight on behalf of Hustler magazine when and if it’s banned somewhere.
Or even defend Ward Churchhill when he said the 9-11 victims got what they deserved.
But in their narrow view, the Confederate flag can’t be tolerated!
But most importantly, if they knew their history well enough, they’d know the KKK didn’t even adopt the flag as one of its symbols until the 1930s, 70 years after the Civil War ended.
If you follow that logic, a cross is a symbol of hatred and oppression, when it’s really the exact opposite for Christians, at least.
November 7th, 2005 at 1:49 pm
Chris I agree with you completely! I have family members that have and hang up the confederate flag, but they don’t see it as slavery, but as a symbol of the south. Thats because my dad’s side of the family is all southern.
But, because of the racial issues associated with it, it does bother me a little. I sure as well wouldn’t bring in one of my black friends to my relatives house who had one hanging, just because I know that it would offend them.
November 7th, 2005 at 2:24 pm
Well, my point is these same people are really the close-minded ones.
If it offends them, it should be shielded from them and society as a whole.
But if it offends other people, and not them, their attitude is others should just look away or change the channel and stop complaining and shoving their values and morals down others’ throats .
I saw two guys making out on TV the other day, for instance. and was instantly offended (not to mention grossed out), but I recognize that I’ll be offended by certain things in life no matter what.
These protestors should try to open an HONEST dialogue about racial problems in the country, and how best to tackle them, rather than attacking symbols……….But quite frankly, you can’t have a candid conversation about race in this country anyway…….Just look at what happened to William Bennett when he tried.

…. burp
November 8th, 2005 at 8:56 am
ignoring jim’s previous comment….. Chris–I TOTALLY Agree. I think bennett was having an open, honest talk about abortion, crime, and the black population. I felt it had nothing to do with racism, and more to do with the sad state of affairs in this country as well as the gap in many things between white and black populations.
for the media to blow up at his words is rediculous. He himself said it was a morally reprehensible thing, he was simply stating an analogy to the previous comment he made about how the crime rate has gone down while abortions have gone up. He was showing that the statistic was very generalized and made no effort to qualify its results.
People are stupid, this Bennett guy is obviously smart.
November 8th, 2005 at 10:11 am
I agree with you too, but back to the topic of the confederate flag… what do you think about the confederate flag… I mean if you had one hanging in your room or something… would you invite a black friend into your room knowing that they would be offended by it?
November 8th, 2005 at 1:36 pm
I wouldn’t necessarily KNOW they’d be offended by it. Saying that I “know” someone would be offended, sorta makes the assumption that EVERYONE black believes it is offensive. That isn’t the case.
November 8th, 2005 at 1:50 pm
Well, I know several who are offended by it. I do not know, or haven’t asked others if they are offended, just the ones that happened to mention it I guess, so you are just as right as I am.
But my question wasn’t about if you knew they were offended, but if you had one black friend who you knew was offended by it because they said they were, would you let them into your confederate room?
November 8th, 2005 at 2:04 pm
I think most of the blacks and whites who are offended by the confederate flag are offended by racism and embrace politicial correctness and “white” racism at its highest levels. I think most informed and educated people know it’s not a racist emblem. It’s a Southern emblem. However, “militant”, uniformed, ignorant, or those taught by their friends and family — blacks and whites… are the ones that cause the ruckus. I’m HIGHLY offended by some of Malcom X’s, Spike Lee, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and others. But do you see me wigging out about it? No, I laugh, do what I can to educate myself on the issues, and teach my daughter the moral differences between right and wrong.
… burp
November 8th, 2005 at 3:31 pm
why are you burping you f—ing hick?
November 8th, 2005 at 5:15 pm
Actually Ditto, it’s a lot like my policy on swearing.
I do a fair amount of it, but I won’t do it in front of any particular person if I believe it will offend them (that’s why I never say the F word in front of my Mom or at church, LOL) .
I guess the same goes for the Confederate flag as well.
November 8th, 2005 at 7:06 pm
I am …burp burping just to yank your wang. I spend my days managing 9 other people and 4 applications. I have to be alert and smart all day. Plus I’m somewhat of a news, history, politics, current events, and music junkie. So my brain needs to have some downtime and … burp sometimes.
I could change it to … errp, if that’s more politically correct. muwahahaha
November 8th, 2005 at 7:08 pm
Yea! The new phone book is here! The new phone book is here! And I’m in it! I’m somebody! Eeeeee!
And I’m now officially #6 in comments, corporal James Tiberius Ford. All hail heir Ramdac!
November 8th, 2005 at 8:13 pm
Jim, you are strange, and who cares about the phone book, thats what I used to pull out in Middle school to prank call people, so why do you want some punk kid calling you asking you idk, pranks don’t change much over the years, “Is your refridgerator running?”
Chris I understand that perfectly, you give a great analogy for things. Just awesome. With Jason swearing just before you made that comment… made me laugh too. hehe
November 8th, 2005 at 8:14 pm
Jim,
As long as you don’t beat me in ranking I don’t care, after all, to me, the ranking system Jason has is a competition for me!
November 9th, 2005 at 8:40 am
Young lady ditto… the new phone book is here… is a quote, from the 20+ year old movie classic starring Steve Martin in, “The Jerk”. I thought it’d be appropriate and a few people would pick up the irony. Would that be irony? I can never remember the proper usage of that word.
My comments usually aren’t targeted at the “barely was born in the last century crowd”. Your snap of the fingers reply was made without considering the context…. I miss being 19.
I can have as much fun as I want.
I like Jason’s ranking system. There are many in life who enjoy healthy competition. The world exists and gets better because of those who strive in competition to rise above mediocrity. You’re dating a man who strives to be the best at everything he does. Which is in and of itself a competition. With others, and with himself.
“I got you for 2 months Bender, 2 months. Don’t mess with the bull young man, you’ll get the horns”
November 9th, 2005 at 10:18 am
Never saw ‘the jerk’ so my bad…
now what movie is this from?
“I got you for 2 months Bender, 2 months. Don’t mess with the bull young man, you’ll get the horns”
I wasn’t born barely last century… after all a century is 100 years… so I mean thats a lot to be compared by… if you said decade It’d be a little more funny.
I was born July 4th, 1986.
November 9th, 2005 at 10:20 am
“(that’s why I never say the F word in front of my Mom or at church, LOL).”
I have a funny story about my mother swearing infront of a preacher, well its not funny at all really, sad, embarrassing. NM
November 9th, 2005 at 10:59 am
Ditto, I believe your quote is from the Breakfast Club.
July 4, 1986………….the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, BTW.
And you know what’s scary……….I remember what I was doing that exact day…….taking a trip with my family to the zoo in Monroe, Louisiana.
November 9th, 2005 at 11:17 am
I remember what I was doing that day too, I was with jason and we went out to eat at a nice Italian resurant, and he bought me clothes and jewelry for my b-day. It was a very special day for me, because I spent it with him.
The breakfast club… I’ve seen that once before. I remember enjoying the movie, but I do not remember too much about it just kids in detition in the library talking arguing, and then I remember at the end the guy walking across the football field and jumping up and clicking his heels together.
November 9th, 2005 at 11:20 am
I have a few great links to talk about the confederate flags… and what some of them look like. After all their was more than one design.

November 9th, 2005 at 11:40 am
OK Ditto, so was the movie the Breakfast Club or not?
I could be wrong, but I’m virtually certain you’re referring to the scene where the teacher gets really pissed off at Judd Nelson’s character, and threatens him with two more months detention.
If not, what movie was it from?
And I’m assuming you mean July 4 of this year when Jason took you out????
Because I’d be extremely disturbed if that happened in 1986.
November 9th, 2005 at 1:22 pm
Jimvford was the one who gave the quote from the movie… I origionally asked him where it was from, and I thought you were the one telling me it was from the breakfast club… IDK? ask Jim.
Also yes it happened of this year, no Jason did not take me out the year I was born!!!!
November 9th, 2005 at 10:07 pm
Yes, it’s the Breakfast Club… one of many 80’s classics by director John Hughes. Bender tells him “eat me shorts” and he gets another week of detention. It’s a shouting match. The principal gives him another week each time he says something.
“Claire, Claire is a fat girl’s name”.
I like flags. The flow this way and that.
November 10th, 2005 at 8:30 am
Ok…
Ditto Rent “The Jerk” very Classic
(Better than the Breakfast club
The Confederate Flag was not originally a racist symbol. It is a symbol for pride in a time period and a country. It was the Waste of space racist groups who hyjacked the symbol as their own. The problem is that these idioits get more face time in the media than the poeple who arent using the flag in the wrong way.
The only way to know if the condfederate flag should be offensive is to know the heart of the person flying the flag. If Ramdac was flying the flag, I would feel certain it was either pride or some sort of civic duty, but if some skin head was flying the flag we would know exactly what it means.
Ditto your question.
If I had a black friend and a confererate flag, He would either not find the flag offensive or not be my friend.
November 10th, 2005 at 8:32 am
Chris and Jim
Everyone knows there is only one top dog in the game of posts.
I’m Rick James Biatch
November 10th, 2005 at 10:51 am
So Joey, you wouldn’t be friends with someone because they didn’t agree with you on the subject of the confederate flag? Hmmm, I am sorry, but I don’t agree with you there. I like to have friends with different opinions and from different backgrounds, and I love to listen to them and their views. I don’t have to be right all the time, just most of it ; )
November 10th, 2005 at 10:52 am
“I’m Rick James Biatch” I know thats from Dave Chappell… I got one out of three… not bad!
November 10th, 2005 at 11:18 am
Whoever said I was competing?
I just bought a huge Nissan Frontier Pick-Up truck, so I don’t need this board to feel like a man, LOL!
November 10th, 2005 at 11:37 am
Ditto, I was saying I didnt think the logic of the question made sense. If I had a confederate flag in my room, my offended black friend probably wouldnt want in the room.
I can get along with someone I can disagree on some issues, heck just look at me and my brother.
Chris I just had pipes installed on my new truck, so I know what you mean.
November 10th, 2005 at 11:50 am
well you have no choice with your brother though… its blood.
November 10th, 2005 at 12:25 pm
you cant choose your family
j/k bro-man
November 10th, 2005 at 2:17 pm
what do you mean when you say pipes? what is the big deal with spicing up a car anyways? Just a car. Silly to me.
November 10th, 2005 at 2:43 pm
pipes make the truck sound louder when I get on the gas. I didnt go real loud like some poeple do, I just want people to know when I mean business.
it isnt just a car. It is just a truck.
and well…it is silly
November 10th, 2005 at 2:52 pm
why do you want your car to be louder? thats dumb to me… I want a nice smooth quiet drive… its like guys who put huge sound systems in their cars… just silly to have to vibrate while your driving. I just described Jason… I know, but its still silly to me to listen to music so loud… I willa t concerts, parties, ect… but why in your car? I use the word Car joey, like the word vechile… it means all vechiles to me. but yeah I know its a truck.
November 10th, 2005 at 3:17 pm
Ditto…………Speaking of things that are silly that guys do…………Exactly how many pairs of shoes do you own?
November 10th, 2005 at 4:32 pm
well, I own:
1 hiking shoes
1 tennis shoes
1 slippers
1 scandals
2 high heels(one white, one black)
1 boots
Ask Jason how many shoes he owns… he has more than me!!!!!
Infact he often tells me that I need to buy more shoes. Asks me, “When are you gonna buy more shoes?”
Its not just a silly thing girls do!
November 10th, 2005 at 5:29 pm
1 - New Sneakers
1 - old, grungy sneakers
1 - work shoes
1 - church shoes
1 - scandals?
November 10th, 2005 at 7:41 pm
1-cowboy boots
1-sneakers
1-work/church shoes
1-sandals
Exactly how many pairs do you own Jason?
November 11th, 2005 at 10:02 am
2 of the exact same dress shoes in both brown and black
1 house shoes (I try to wear these as much as possible… they are so comfy)
1 tennis shoe
1 cowboy boots
3-4 pairs of old shoes he never wears
1 penny loafer thingy(has little tassles on them)
1 scandal (I think)
1 old tennis shoe
and a few others. the list goes on and on…
November 11th, 2005 at 7:41 pm
Shoes, trucks, sound systems… AND some of you ma’ams and sirs were drunk when you posted… cause you’re typing sucks!
I think what Joey meant was the kind of friends he would have, whether black or white, would be educated and open minded enough to understand why he had a confederate flag…. versus assume he’s racist.
I have only a 2003 Chevy Silverado quad cab. I hate trucks that sound that loud and I can’t stand sound systems you can hear outside of your own vehicle. But… it’s cool as hell to hear a souped up muscle car idling. Then rev it a little. Man… nice…
