There is no comparison

May 11th, 2004

Trust me, I’m not trying to condone the prisoner abuse in which a small number of our soldiers have participated, but there is simply no comparison between what our soldiers did to the prisoners and what the terrorists have done to us. I broke it down for you here:

War versus terrorism

I’m glad that our military has come clean with the fact that we abused some prisoners, and I’m glad that it is out in the open, but until I see our soldiers hanging naked and burned bodies from bridges, I’m simply not going to argue with anyone about how bad our military has acted in Iraq. Get over it.

I agree. But that video opened up my eyes more than anything possibly could I think. I hope it does to more Americans as well.

    :Begin Slippery Slope:

I imagine these kinds of videos will keep coming. These things will definitely strike the nerves of the common American. I expect knee-jerk reactions to be: “Nuke ‘em all” (see the threads at Fark.com) or “time to pull out completely”. The worst thing this administration can do is follow a knee-jerk reaction.

A few more videos like this, and Bush’s approval ratings will floor.

If we react in an inhumane manner to the inhumane reaction to the inhumane actions, then Iraq will dissolve into another Vietnam.

I don’t pretend to know what the solution is. But I can tell you that to view the Middle East with American eyes is to miss the point entirely. The culture there is entirely different than what most of us know as reality.

Could it be that our soldiers are dealing with the locals on their terms? View the video of the devils beheading that boy and you can’t help but think that maybe our bleeding, liberal hearts can’t begin to understand the soul of the Iraqi’s.

I don’t have the answer. My Western mind can’t translate it. And I’m afraid that few of us will.

Interrogation is a part of the nasty business of War. We cant expect prisoners to tell everything they know, while we serve milk and cookies. I am not saying that I approve of what happened, But I am willing to bet that it has always happened. The past soldiers were jsut smart enough not to take pictures of it. LIke Benissocool said, we cant pretend to understand the culture in every country.

There is no telling what they did to Saddam to get information, I bet they pumped him full of Advil.

Hopefully “Advil” isn’t the nickname some prison guy gave to his wang.

Maybe the essence of the pictures on the left are what caused the pictures on the right. I don’t believe that though. What we did was not THAT cruel - they even put bags over their heads. It’s not like those people really even knew what was going on. Next to that, these photos should of never been leaked. Gotta love the Internet.

first off…i’m having trouble logging in..agian..

anyway…the iraqis didn’t fly the planes into the world trade center towers (that was predominately saudi’s remember?) so no revisionist history please.

Nessence, to say that the images should never have been released is awful ignorant…we knew of the abuses before the images came about..the iraqis certainly did (i mean we did it to them, they in turn cut off a man’s head) so the only people suprised either 1. don’t follow the news 2.can’t read too good 3.think bush is a beer…i.e. ignorant american’s which you so eloquently represent.

there’s speculation and theories abound over how that berg beheading video is fake. it could just be that i’m gullable, but i’m buying into the theories, cause they make some valid points - the timer in the corner jumps around(david talking about his parents comes after the captors throw him on the ground to cut his head off, then when they’re cutting, the timer says it’s 11 hours later), one of the terrorists appears to be wearing air jordans, and the speaker begins speaking russian at the end of the video. it was also said that he spoke arabic with a russian accent. course, that’s getting a little far into it for me, cause i really couldn’t say one way or the other if he’s got an accent on his arabic or not, but i couldn’t argue with the sneakers and the timer being inconsistent.

alright, If Nick Berg comes home then I will believe your theories about his killing being fake.

firstly, they aren’t MY theories. secondly, i never said he isn’t dead. i said there are theories that the video is faked.

    What Wrong with you!!!!!

These guys that the American soldier are not treating very nicely, are terrorist, they’ll do anything it takes to kill someone or strike fear in people hearts. So I dont know why your hearts go out to the second worst people in the world.
(Religious preachers, missionaries, talkers, are the worst people)

ramdac, i fully agree with u dawg. peace in the middle east will happen only with outside help, becuase without outside help they’re content with just going to war for life. fuck em’

    Anonymous,

    Religious preachers, missionaries, and Talkers?
are the worst People. I dont really understand how you can even compare terrorist to religious ppl. I doesnt matter whether you believe in what they are saying or not, but missionaries help alot of people in this world. Yes, they do spread the religion they believe, but help alot of children. I refuse to compare ppl who decapitate someone or blow up buildings with preachers and missionaires.

So I guess the question is what the hell is wrong with you. anonymous

You are right, there is no comparison. But just in the same way that there is no comparison between 9/11 and America’s attacks on Japan in ‘45 which killed around 100,000 innocent people!

Firstly, 9/11 had absolutely nothing to do with Iraqi’s!

Secondly, I don’t think that you will find that the Iraqi men and women being tortured in these photos had anything to do with the beheading (that you have, for some sick reason, downloaded) either! In fact, as the American military were (and still are) holding SUSPECTED terrorists without reasonable evidence or charge, there is a good chance that some of these people weren’t terrorists at all!

America seems to have this very stupid notion that you bring about peace by bombing and killing… which is completely acceptable when performed to avenge atrocities inflicted on America.

And don’t get me wrong, 9/11 was an terrible and awful atrocity. However, just as the American torture was being carried out by a small number of the American soldiers… 9/11 was carried out by a small number of muslim fundamentalists (not a worldwide terrorist network as it made out to be) and you cannot take it out on Muslims and Afghans in general! (Let alone Iraqi’s)

This whole, ‘Us Vs Them’ attitude is the biggest problem in the world today and exactly the reason why we have terrible atrocities such as 9/11.

An even bigger problem is the powers that be reacting to these atrocities with random attacks on those not directly responsible.

Wise up and start thinking about it!

Two and two don’t make a five and…
two wrongs definately don’t make a right!
