Guo Jian’s symbolic representation

Chinese-born artist Guo Jian is pictured in front of one of his
paintings on show in his Sydney studio March 23, 2004. The painting, titled
‘Demonstrator’ refers to an incident where he was taught to kill while in
China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA). Guo, 40, is one of the many avant-garde
Chinese artists who have moved overseas since the 1989 Tiananmen pro-democracy
protest, which China still labels as counter-revolutionary. (Will

Jian’s art has symbolic representation mostly dealing with China, in some political or cultural fashion. He was only able to freely create once he fled China after what happened at Tiananman Square.
I found an interesting
interview with him, where he talked about Tiananmen Square, his father, and
propaganda art. I wish America would embrace more artists like this.
Hooray for Australia.
You can see a decent gallery
of artwork created by Guo Jian, at the Ray
Hughes Gallery.

I love Guo Jian’s work. I happened to see one of his paintings in Insadong (Seoul) this weekend. His style is unmistable and compelling. I believe he had a show in Pusan several months back. I hope his work comes to Seoul while I’m in this country.
