Detroit Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman speaks to the
media Friday, May 7, 2004, at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Yzerman will
miss the upcoming World Cup of Hockey due to the eye injury and was
replaced Sunday, July 11, 2004, on Team Canada by Vincent Lecavalier of
the Tampa Bay Lightning.

You saw it didn’t you? It was on ESPN. He got slammed in the eye by a hockey puck traveling no less than one hundred thousand miles per hour (i’m sure it must have felt that way at least). You know that sh** hurt.

Poor Yzerman. He’s tough, though. He’ll be back on the ice in no time. I saw a minor league game once where two guys jumped out of their respective penalty boxes to commence pounding one another. As they were being escorted from the building you could see blood on the ice.

It is a brutal game. They do offer the helments that protect the faces to these guys, most choose not to wear them.

I’ve never understood why more players don’t use the clear face shields either. I used to go to Penguins games all the time, and as rough as it looks on TV, you really get a sense for how those guys get knocked around when you see it live. Like Joey said, it’s brutal.

A simple face shield would of prevented this but breathing into a clear shield on the ice will cause humidity in the clear shield blocking your view which is why most don’t wear them.
